Valais/Wallis Promotion Tourism: Snow of a Century

November 25, 2015Filed under Film, Online and Transport, Tourism

100-year-old snow: the oldest residents in Valais are presented with snow that fell the year they were born. The most wonderful time of the year will soon be here. Valais/Wallis Promotion and the advertising agency Contexta AG therefore wanted to find out more about the beauty of winter in Valais and have talked to the people who know this magical season better than anyone. After all, they have witnessed it 100 times, 96 times or even 101 times.

These Valais residents have been given a very special gift: snow from their very first winter. Snow that fell in the year they were born. This is, in part, to say thank you for the fact that they too have helped to make Valais what it is during their lifetime and partly to share in their memories of times gone by and pass them on. The snow, which has since turned into ice, was recovered from a layer deep in the Rhône Glacier in northeastern Valais. Glaciologists carried out the drilling in collaboration with Valais/Wallis Promotion and assisted and supported the company during the implementation process.

The ice was packed into eight hand-blown jars with handmade walnut lids, each of which was engraved with the name and the year of birth of the recipient. So the gift, which measured around 1,600 cm2, was very personally packaged in a way that will last a lifetime. With this emotional project, which was captured on film, Valais/Wallis Promotion want to portray the residents’ attachment to Valais while creating a feeling of joyful anticipation of another magical winter.
